A BIT ABOUT HITCHIN
Hitchin is a market town in Hertfordshire approximately 37 miles north of London, and has a population of circa 34k.
Some Background History to Hitchin
Hitchin is a medieval market town in Hertfordshire with a history that stretches far back in time. The river Hiz (pronounced ‘hitch') runs through Hitchin, and sits picturesquely in front of St Mary's Church.
Hitchin's history actually begins with King Offa of Mercia who founded a religious house in AD792 on and occupied by the Hicce tribe. This was the beginning of Hitchin's parish church.
Historically, Hitchin flourished due to its wood trade. During the 17th Century the town was a staging post for coaching from London. The railway arrived in the mid-19th Century and Hitchin established itself as a major centre for grain trading, and The Corn Exchange was built, which is still standing today.
Hitchin has many fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, particularly around the market square. In the centre of the market square is a clock made by Gatewards the jewellers, who have had a shop in the town since 1760.

St Mary's Church
In the centre of Hitchin on the banks of the river Hiz stands St Mary's Church, which is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire and formerly a Minster. The church dates back to the 14th/15th Century, and was built with money from the wool trade. Under the floor in the Nave of St Mary's church are the origins of a Saxon church which stood on the site before St Mary's church was built.
